Quilting 101
Wednesdays, January 27th, February 3rd, 10th, & 17th, 10am to 3:30pm
Learn basics quilting skills, including accurate rotary cutting, how to read a pattern, measuring and that all important ¼” seam. You will learn techniques in class and practice them at home. There will be class work and homework. The last session we will cover layering, quilting and binding.
The quilt pattern for this class is will be given to you in class. At the end of our sessions you will have a quilt top, ready to quilt; you will start a life time of creativity, beauty, inspiration and enjoyment.
A sewing machine in good working order, remember to bring the cords, foot pedal, ¼” foot and extra bobbins. You should know how to operate your machine before you come to class. Remember to bring the manual. Please be sure your sewing machine has been recently cleaned and oiled prior to class. Bring basic sewing supplies.
Basic sewing supplies include scissors for fabric & paper, thread snips or embroidery scissors, quilting pins, measuring tape, paper & pen for notes, highlighter, chalk markers, seam ripper, 1” x 6” ruler, ¼ “ seam gauge, sewing awl or stiletto and any other sewing tools you like to use.
You will need the following fabric amounts
1 yard of focus fabric for the large squares
¾ of a yard of the fabric for the outside border
½ yard each of three fabrics for the pieced squares (the 3 stripe sections)
½ yard of fabric for the inner border
¾ yard of fabric for the binding
You will need additional fabric for backing. We will go over the fabric requirements in class.
6.5” x 24” ruler; and 3.5” x 14” ruler or rulers that are about these sizes, or what you have.
Cutting Mat medium to large size
Rotary cutter, with a new blade. If you are unsure of the age of your blade change it. If you are unsure how to change the blade I will help you in class.
A flannel backed tablecloth. You can purchase this at a discount store. You won’t need this till the 2nd class.
Thread to blend with fabrics, please wind 2 bobbins with this thread before class.
Please feel free to bring a beverage, lunch or snacks. Don’t forget to bring your reading glasses if needed, a sweater and anything else you may need to make your class perfect. If you want a visual record of your class please bring your camera.
